Iodomolybdic Acid, I2O5.2MoO3.2H2O

Iodomolybdic Acid, I2O5.2MoO3.2H2O, may be obtained by treating with concentrated nitric acid a solution containing iodic and molybdic acids, or by decomposing the barium salt in nitric acid solution by means of sulphuric acid. It yields white microscopic prisms which are extremely soluble in water. Normal salts of the type I2O5.2MoO3.R2O are precipitated when solutions of the alkali iodates are saturated with molybdenum trioxide, and by double decomposition the corresponding salts of magnesium, calcium, strontium, barium, zinc, nickel, cobalt, copper, and silver have been obtained.

Rosenheim suggests for the free acid the formula H2[I2O4(MoO4)2]; but the numerous acid salts, obtainable by interaction of the acid with alkali nitrate solutions, necessitates the use of multiple formulae.
